Revealed: why Chelsea didn’t try to sign notable experience players

Chelsea signed many players this summer and in the last couple of transfer windows but none of them are proven and experienced Premier League players, and that carries a risk.

The risk is being shown clearly right now as The Blues struggle to get results on the board and only five points in their first six matches, which is far from good enough.

It could of course pay off once the players mature a bit and gel together, but the fact is that this buying strategy was always going to be a risk for the here and now and is more for the future. But Chelsea need results and they need to climb from their current 14th place league position, and the only way you do that is to get results here and now.

So why didn’t they sign a couple more experienced and Premier League proven players such as James Maddison or James Ward-Prowse who were both available and made moves this summer?

Well, according to The Telegraph, Chelsea set a 25-and-under rule on their incoming summer business as the club looked to build a squad that could see them through the next decade.

The rule meant players like James Maddison and James Ward-Prowse, who have flourished at Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United respectively, were never really considered, while they also backed away from paying what they felt to be an English premium placed on Declan Rice, who had been a top target of former head coach Graham Potter.
