Rio Ferdinand has weighed in on the debate over England’s biggest football club after Liverpool secured the Premier League title this weekend. With their record-equalling 20th league crown, many, including Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher, believe Liverpool have now claimed the title of the undisputed kings of English football—a title that had long been held by Manchester United.
In addition to their league success, Liverpool also boast six European Cups, more than any other English club, while United are currently on track for their worst-ever Premier League finish, sitting 14th. With many feeling the balance has shifted, Ferdinand has shared his opinion.

On his YouTube channel with Peter Crouch, Ferdinand insisted that Manchester United remain the biggest club in English football, despite the contrasting fortunes of the two teams. He went as far as to say the gap between the clubs wasn’t even close, stating:

Ferdinand’s comments sparked a reaction on social media and even caught Peter Crouch off guard, who initially scoffed at the idea but later admitted he disagreed with Ferdinand’s view.
Gary Neville, Ferdinand’s former United teammate, said Liverpool’s 20th league title was a wake-up call at Old Trafford, arguing that the debate over which club is the biggest was now settled.
“The debate about the most successful club could’ve been argued when Manchester United had 20 titles, but with Liverpool now on 20 and having more European Cups, the debate is over,” Neville said.
“It should be a real wake-up call at Old Trafford. The thought that Liverpool could be the most successful club—after all that it took to get ahead of them—is painful to accept.”
