Robertson declines a transfer to Atletico, choosing instead to compete for his spot at Liverpool, according to reports.

Liverpool may no longer need to focus on replacing one of their most accomplished defenders this summer due to a significant update from Spain.

Matteo Moretto reported on X that Atletico Madrid has reached a €20m deal, including bonuses, for Atalanta’s left-back Matteo Ruggeri. The negotiations were kept highly confidential, and it appears only minor details remain before finalizing the agreement. Atletico has reportedly already arranged for Ruggeri’s medical examination, according to Moretto.

While this news might not seem directly relevant, it gained significance when Moretto responded to a fan’s question about whether this move eliminates interest in Andrew Robertson. He confirmed that Robertson was second on Atletico’s list, following Theo, with Ruggeri now signed.

This suggests that Robertson, a Scotland international, turned down Atletico’s advances in favor of competing at Liverpool. The 30-year-old, who joined from Hull City in 2017, had been linked to a move to Spain, especially with the arrival of Hungary’s Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, who is expected to become the long-term successor.

Robertson’s potential exit might have allowed backup Kostas Tsimikas, who played 29 matches last season, to remain. However, with Ruggeri set to join Atletico, it seems Robertson has opted to fight for his place at Anfield against Kerkez instead. This could mean Tsimikas might be the one to leave, as previously anticipated.
