This marks City’s worst streak in six years, leaving them five points adrift of Liverpool in the Premier League race. Rodri’s season-ending ACL injury, sustained against Arsenal, has left a noticeable void in City’s midfield. While Mateo Kovacic has performed admirably, he typically plays further forward, and Ilkay Gundogan, who rejoined on a free transfer from Barcelona, has struggled to regain form.

Manchester City rarely make mid-season signings, but reports from the Daily Star suggest that the club is prepared to invest £100 million in January reinforcements. They are reportedly targeting Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who excelled for Spain in the Euros, stepping into Rodri’s role in the final.

A source close to City claims Rodri has been advising Guardiola on Zubimendi’s style and strengths. Although Zubimendi is not as physically imposing as Rodri, he offers a similar playing profile. He was also a top target for Liverpool last summer, but the player ultimately chose to stay with Sociedad, declaring his commitment to the Basque club. However, City may trigger Zubimendi’s £60 million release clause as they look to reinforce the squad.
