Ruben Amorim’s first match as Manchester United’s manager ended in a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town. The 39-year-old’s Premier League debut saw United take an early lead through Marcus Rashford, only for Omari Hutchinson’s deflected strike to equalize for the newly-promoted Ipswich side at Portman Road.
While there were some promising moments early on, United’s performance quickly waned, revealing numerous areas for improvement. Fans voiced their dissatisfaction with two players, and Amorim seemed to share their concerns.
After the match, Amorim discussed his team’s performance with Sky Sports, where Jamie Redknapp asked about the need for higher intensity to match his playing style. Amorim singled out veteran Jonny Evans for not pressing Ipswich’s Hutchinson effectively, who frequently found space in the game’s “dead zones.”
Evans, who played on the left side of a back three, was replaced by Luke Shaw in the 56th minute. Amorim pointed out that players, due to limited training time, were struggling to adapt and weren’t pressing as required. He explained that without proper training, players lacked the necessary reactions and didn’t push forward as needed. Amorim emphasized the importance of physical fitness and high-intensity running to meet the demands of high-pressure play.
In his starting lineup, Amorim deployed Amad Diallo and Diogo Dalot as wing-backs, with Rashford playing centrally ahead of Rasmus Hojlund.
United’s next match is Thursday at Old Trafford, where they face Norwegian team Bodo/Glimt, marking Amorim’s first home game in charge. Currently, United are in 12th place in the Premier League, six points behind the top four.
