Manchester United’s new manager discussed his recent appointment and the circumstances leading to it. Ruben Amorim, 39, shared details of his negotiations with United, revealing that the club turned down his request to finish the season at Sporting CP before joining.
Amorim’s appointment as United’s head coach was officially announced on Friday, following speculation about his future. He will assume his role on November 11, but his first match won’t be until an away game against Ipswich Town on November 24. Until then, interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy will guide United through matches against Chelsea, PAOK, and Leicester City, following the team’s recent 5-2 Carabao Cup victory over Leicester.
Interestingly, despite his new position, Amorim still led Sporting CP to a commanding 5-1 win over Estrela Amadora on Friday evening. In his post-match press conference, he explained how United’s “now or never” ultimatum left him with only three days to decide, even though he’d expressed a desire to stay with Sporting until the end of the season.
Amorim noted that he informed Sporting’s President Frederico Varandas and then-sporting director Hugo Viana at the start of the season that this would be his last year with the club. However, when United approached, they paid above his release clause and insisted on an immediate transition, forcing him to choose quickly.
He further disclosed that United’s offer wasn’t his only one, as other clubs were interested, with one willing to pay “three times more” than United, underscoring that the move wasn’t financially motivated.
