The defeat marked United’s sixth loss in a single calendar month, equaling an unwanted record. Newcastle dominated early on, taking a 2-0 lead within 20 minutes thanks to goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton. In response, Amorim made the tough call to replace Zirkzee, who was struggling on the left of a front three, with Kobbie Mainoo.

The substitution was met with sarcastic cheers from the home crowd, a reaction that drew criticism from former United captain Gary Neville, who was on commentary. Zirkzee appeared visibly upset, heading down the tunnel with “tears in his eyes,” according to a Sky Germany reporter, before returning to the bench.

In his post-match interview, Amorim expressed sympathy for Zirkzee, acknowledging the difficulty of the situation while emphasizing the need to prioritize the team.

“You have to think about the team and also the player because the player is suffering,” Amorim told Sky Sports. “I’ve been there. I felt the team needed another midfielder. It was really tough on me to do that, and I spoke with Josh because it’s important to send the right message.

“I know Josh is a good guy, and his reaction was understandable. We will support him and move forward.”

Neville, meanwhile, criticized the fans’ treatment of Zirkzee, calling it “brutal.”

“I actually feel sorry for Joshua Zirkzee,” Neville said. “There’s a human being in there being cheered off by his own fans. That’s brutal. I haven’t seen that happen too many times in my 43 years coming here.”

Zirkzee, who joined United in the summer on a five-year deal for £36 million, has struggled to adapt, scoring just four goals in 25 appearances. Amid speculation about a potential early exit, Amorim’s handling of the situation will be key in determining the Dutch forward’s future at the club.
