After the win over Aston Villa, manager Arne Slot spoke about the goalkeeper situation: “Firstly, Alisson needs to get fit, and I’ve been clear, as has Alisson himself, that he is, and will remain, our first-choice keeper when he’s ready to play. But he needs to be fit first, and Caoimhin [Kelleher] has performed outstandingly, both last season and again this season. However, once Alisson is fit, he’ll resume his role as our primary goalkeeper.”

With Alisson expected to remain sidelined until after the international break, his immediate return is uncertain. Meanwhile, the win over Unai Emery’s side once again highlighted the talents of the Irish shot-stopper, making it clear that Liverpool hasn’t missed their world-class No. 1 during his absence.

Kelleher’s strong performances for league-leading Liverpool have sparked discussions about his future. The 25-year-old has done everything right but may never permanently replace Alisson, a situation that could be frustrating for him. While he’s arguably the best backup keeper in the world, his long-term future might lie away from Merseyside.
