Ortega, who replaced regular goalkeeper Ederson in a surprising move by Pep Guardiola, conceded an early goal to Cody Gakpo and later fouled Luis Diaz, leading to a penalty converted by Mo Salah. The defeat marked City’s seventh consecutive game without a win, dropping them to fifth in the Premier League table.
Liverpool fans taunted Guardiola with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning,” prompting the manager to hold up six fingers, referencing the Premier League titles he has won since joining City in 2016. Ortega, asked about Guardiola’s reaction in a post-match interview, sparked controversy by saying he had heard Liverpool “is probably not the best part of the UK,” a comment many fans labeled “tasteless” and “nasty.”
Guardiola addressed the chants after the match, admitting he was surprised by the reaction at Anfield. “I didn’t expect Anfield to chant for me to be sacked at 0-2,” he said. “Maybe I deserve it with our results, but I’ve won six Premier Leagues and a lot of titles. I didn’t expect that from Anfield—it’s fine, it’s part of the game.”
City will aim to bounce back on Wednesday when they host Nottingham Forest, who are just one point behind them in the league standings.
