Take It or Leave It: Daniel Levy Says His Work at Spurs Will Be Truly Valued After He’s Gone

Daniel Levy believes true appreciation for his contributions to Tottenham Hotspur will only come once he’s no longer at the helm.

Having taken charge in 2001, the Spurs chairman has overseen a dramatic transformation of the club, including the construction of the state-of-the-art Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and turning the club into one of the Premier League’s most financially successful outfits.

However, his leadership hasn’t been without controversy. Some fans voiced frustration last season, staging “Levy Out” protests amid concerns over the club’s direction.

Still, Levy recently enjoyed a high point in his tenure as Tottenham ended a 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League in May—an achievement he described as his best night as chairman.

In a rare interview with Gary Neville on Sky Bet’s The Overlap, Levy was asked whether he feels recognized for all he’s done.

He replied:
“I think it’s one of those things—people will give me credit once I’m no longer here. When you walk into this incredible stadium and see that other clubs are now trying to replicate what we’ve built, it suggests we did something bold and got it right.”

Levy has faced criticism for keeping the club’s wage structure tighter than other members of the Premier League’s traditional “big six,” but financially, Spurs have thrived—bringing in £520 million in revenue during the 2023/24 season alone.

He added:
“We’ve done everything ourselves, without a wealthy backer pouring in hundreds of millions. We’ve been resourceful and grown our income so we can stay competitive. Yes, there are clubs bigger than us, but this league is fierce, and we’ve shown we can still beat teams with greater financial power.”
