Thomas Frank delivers firm message on the Tottenham lineup he plans to field against Doncaster in the Carabao Cup
Tottenham Hotspur begin their Carabao Cup journey on Wednesday as League One outfit Doncaster Rovers head to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Thomas Frank knows the importance of the fixture, stressing that his team must approach it with full focus as he looks to make an early statement in the competition.
With Spurs set to battle on several fronts this season, the Carabao Cup represents another chance to chase silverware following last year’s Europa League triumph. Frank, who is still searching for his first major trophy, is determined to guide his side deep into the tournament.
The manager has underlined that Doncaster will not be underestimated, acknowledging that while there will be some changes to his line-up, victory remains the ultimate goal. “We are really looking forward to it. We will do everything we can to win it. Naturally there will be a little bit of rotation. They have Grant McCann, who I know very well from the Championship. We need to play at our highest level and get into the next round,” Frank told the club’s channel.
On Tottenham’s approach this season, Frank was clear: “We need to take one game at a time. It is about winning the next one. There is no reason to speak about what may happen in the future.” Reflecting on his cup experiences, he added: “It definitely taught me everything is possible. Football is a low-scoring game, anything can happen. Doncaster are doing well in League One. We need to be on it.”
Frank also hinted at potential bench roles for academy prospects, admitting that while his starting XIs will always be strong, there could be opportunities for youngsters to gain experience. “It is a balance. I would like us to compete in all four tournaments across the year. If you are going to do that, you need to pick the right team all the time. Every time we put a team out there it is super strong. It will be a strong team tomorrow. I think it will be a great opportunity to have some of the young ones on the bench. It is a privilege to give someone a debut, but they must earn it first at youth and international level.”
