Thomas Frank explains why he believes the 2-2 draw against Brighton was Tottenham’s strongest display of the season.
Tottenham will no doubt be relieved to have rescued a point against Brighton after finding themselves 2-0 behind inside the opening half hour. Yet, based on the balance of play, the North London side may feel they had enough chances to take all three points at the Amex.
That was certainly the view of Thomas Frank, who praised his players’ intensity and spirit, admitting he could not have asked for more. The Spurs boss was particularly impressed by the mentality his squad showed, especially after a demanding Champions League tie with Villarreal just days earlier.
Frank even admitted he got “goosebumps” watching his side’s relentless recovery runs and work rate, hailing it as the team’s most complete performance of the season. Reflecting on the comeback, he said:
“I’m very pleased with the resilience. Even when we fought back to 2-2, the players were disappointed because they wanted to win. That tells you about the mentality of the group. For me, this was perhaps our most complete performance so far. Yes, we conceded two goals, but there were so many positives — the pressing, the man-to-man intensity, the high pressure.”
The Dane was full of praise for how his side pressed high and counter-pressed effectively whenever they lost possession. Despite conceding twice, Frank emphasised that Spurs defended well for large periods, created numerous opportunities, and dictated the game with their aggressive approach.
He summed it up by pointing to both the tactical execution and the character on display: Tottenham not only stuck to their high-intensity style but also showed the resilience to battle back from two goals down — a combination Frank believes made this their strongest all-round display of the campaign.
