William Saliba received a red card just 30 minutes into Arsenal’s defeat to Bournemouth.
A former Premier League referee has shared his views on Saliba’s sending-off during Arsenal’s 2-0 loss on Saturday night. This match marked the first defeat of the season for Mikel Arteta’s side, with Saliba’s red card becoming a significant talking point.
The incident occurred when Leandro Trossard’s mistimed pass looped over the Arsenal defense, allowing Brazilian forward Evanilson to run through. Saliba then tugged on Evanilson’s shirt as he fell to the ground.
Initially, referee Rob Jones issued a yellow card to Saliba, but after a review, it was upgraded to a red. As a result, the defender will miss Arsenal’s home match against Liverpool on October 27.
Debate arose regarding the severity of the challenge. Although Saliba was positioned away from goal when he pulled down Evanilson, he could still be considered the ‘last man’ in defense.
Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey expressed his “major doubts” about the decision, stating he would have upheld Jones’ initial caution, as reported by The Sun. He elaborated that for a foul to be classified as a denial of a goal-scoring opportunity, “four key criteria” must be satisfied.
“The distance from the foul to the goal was considerable, the direction of play had the ball moving across Evanilson rather than in front of him, and the location and number of defenders were questionable,” Halsey noted.
He added that it was likely Evanilson could have retained or gained control of the ball, as David Raya was backpedaling towards his own goal.
Fans also noticed PGMOL chief Howard Webb in attendance at the Vitality Stadium, but Halsey clarified that Webb had no influence on the decision regarding Saliba’s red card.
“There is no way he would have had any input or communication regarding the [William] Saliba red card,” he emphasized.
After the match, Arteta was asked whether he believed the challenge warranted such a severe penalty.
“Obviously, the intentions were good, and Wilo [William Saliba] has never done anything like this intentionally,” Arteta said via Arsenal.com.
“It’s a split-second decision you have to make; the striker is on his back, and he doesn’t expect the ball to suddenly come his way,” he continued.
“He made a decision, and the referee chose to issue a yellow card first, which then turned into a red.”
