Cristian Romero’s Shoes Will Be Tough to Fill at Tottenham
Cristian Romero has become a cornerstone of Tottenham’s defence, and finding someone to match his influence won’t be easy.
Although Spurs have been hesitant to let him leave during this transfer window, Romero is eager to join Atletico Madrid.
Since arriving from Atalanta in 2022, Romero has formed a formidable partnership with Micky van de Ven—one of the Premier League’s standout defensive duos. However, injuries limited their time together on the pitch last season, and now it appears Spurs fans will have to adjust to a new pairing altogether.
Tottenham Eye Koni De Winter as Romero’s Successor
Spurs are now targeting Belgian centre-back Koni De Winter as a possible replacement.
Despite having no Premier League experience, the Genoa defender is reportedly on Tottenham’s radar this summer, as they prepare to compete for his signature.
According to the print edition of Mundo Deportivo (6 July, page 21), Romero turned down a contract offer that would have made him the highest-paid player at the club. This rejection has only strengthened Atletico Madrid’s belief that they can secure the Argentine.
Romero is open to a move to La Liga, and Spurs have set his valuation at £60 million. However, Atletico’s current proposal stands at around £47.5 million plus add-ons.
In response, Tottenham have begun planning for life without Romero and are ready to pursue a deal for De Winter, expected to cost approximately £20.7 million. The 23-year-old had an impressive campaign in Serie A last season and could offer a cost-effective solution for Spurs.
A Smart Addition—Even If Romero Stays
Even if Romero remains in North London, De Winter would still be a worthwhile addition.
The Belgian defender is highly versatile, capable of playing at full-back on either side, in central defence, as a defensive midfielder, or even further forward in midfield.
He also carries a goal threat, having scored three times for Genoa in the 2024/25 season. This flexibility could give new head coach Thomas Frank the freedom to experiment tactically.
Tottenham’s lack of depth was a key factor in their disappointing Premier League campaign. De Winter’s arrival would bolster the squad and offer reliable cover in multiple areas should injuries arise.
In short, Spurs would be wise not to overlook a talent as adaptable and promising as Koni De Winter this summer.
