Trent Alexander-Arnold has been cautioned that he’s heading into a difficult situation at Real Madrid — where mistakes can be severely punished.

Former Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit has expressed concern over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s potential move to Real Madrid, describing the Spanish club as being in disarray and warning that life there could be much tougher than at Liverpool.

Alexander-Arnold is widely expected to join Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer when his Liverpool contract expires, reuniting with close friend Jude Bellingham. However, Petit believes the defender may come to regret that decision.

With Liverpool on the verge of securing a second Premier League title and Real Madrid facing internal turmoil—having been knocked out of the Champions League by Arsenal and lagging behind Barcelona in La Liga—Petit thinks the timing couldn’t be worse.

“Trent is a Liverpool legend, and after seeing celebrations like the one against Leicester, I thought he might stay—especially after Salah and Van Dijk renewed their contracts,” Petit told Sambaslots. “My advice to him would be to consider what he has at Liverpool. He’s about to win the league again, he’ll always be in Champions League contention—why leave for a chaotic situation in Madrid?

“Real Madrid is a mess right now. If you have one or two bad games, the fans turn on you instantly. There’s no support—unlike the backing he gets at Liverpool.”

Petit noted how even stars like Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Jr. are being jeered, adding that Alexander-Arnold would face relentless pressure to perform.

Meanwhile, after coming off the bench to score the winner against Leicester, Alexander-Arnold was met with a mixed response from fans. Liverpool manager Arne Slot defended him, calling it “ridiculous” to question his loyalty.

“The focus should be on his incredible goal, not on contract speculation,” Slot said. “With everything he’s done for this club, no one should doubt his commitment. Let’s talk about his performance, not his future.”
