The former Watford striker, now 36, scored 47 goals in 165 Premier League games for the Hornets between 2010 and 2021 before transitioning into coaching and becoming a regular pundit on talkSPORT.
On Monday (April 28), Deeney shared his thoughts on Liverpool’s title-winning squad after the Reds clinched the Premier League crown with a commanding 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield the previous day (April 27).
Star performances from Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk helped Arne Slot win the title in his debut season in charge.
Despite Liverpool’s success, Deeney believes the team could still be strengthened — and that one key addition could see them leave their rivals far behind.
“They’re linked with [Alexander] Isak as well — if they land him, just hand them the title for the next five years,” Deeney said during a talkSPORT segment alongside Ally McCoist.
Isak, 25, has been in outstanding form this season, netting 22 goals in 31 Premier League appearances for Newcastle United. His performances are expected to draw attention from top clubs this summer, although he remains under contract with the Magpies until 2028 and could command a fee exceeding £150 million, according to reports.
Deeney also suggested that Liverpool could look to strengthen three other areas of their squad.
“I can see them targeting a left-back,” he said. “[Andrew] Robertson has been brilliant, but there comes a time when changes happen — it’s part of football.
“They might also need another centre-back because if one of their starters gets injured, they’re a bit short there.
“And I still think they could use an extra midfielder. They’ve been fortunate that none of their midfield three have suffered long-term injuries this season. If that were to change, they might struggle with depth.”
Alexander Isak addresses future amid transfer speculation
In an interview with Swedish outlets earlier this year, Isak reaffirmed his commitment to Newcastle:
“There’s not much to say, really. I’ve spoken about how happy and settled I am in Newcastle many times,” he said.
He added: “I love the city and the club, and I’m focused on performing for Newcastle. Now we’ve won the cup, but the goal is to finish strongly and qualify for the Champions League. That’s where my focus is.”
