Liverpool’s Szoboszlai left in tears after costly mistake on international duty

Dominik Szoboszlai endured an emotional evening with Hungary as he broke down in tears following their 3-2 World Cup qualifying loss to Portugal.

The Hungarian captain was visibly distraught on television, apologising to supporters after his misplaced pass allowed Joao Cancelo to net the winning goal in Budapest, according to Origo Sport.

With the score level at 2-2 late on, Szoboszlai attempted to find Liverpool teammate Milos Kerkez, but his pass was intercepted. Portugal capitalised immediately, Cancelo slotting home to seal victory and leave the midfielder devastated at full-time.

The 24-year-old, usually quick to face the media, instead hid his face in his shirt and avoided interviews afterwards. TV cameras showed goalkeeper Balazs Toth consoling him as he mouthed apologies to fans in the stands.

The incident highlights the heavy burden Szoboszlai carries as Hungary’s captain and creative hub. At Liverpool, where Arne Slot’s side have already added Florian Wirtz to share some of the creative load, Szoboszlai remains a key figure.

Why it matters for Liverpool
It’s been an emotionally testing international break for the squad. Just days earlier, Virgil van Dijk voiced strong criticism of his Netherlands teammates despite their win over Lithuania.

Liverpool will hope Szoboszlai can quickly move past this setback, as his energy, leadership, and versatility—whether at right back or in midfield—are vital in the club’s ongoing title defence.
