UEFA Confirms Major Champions League Rule Update Ahead of 2025-26 Kickoff
UEFA have introduced a major Champions League rule change just days before Europe’s premier club competition begins. Arsenal, Tottenham, and Real Madrid are all in action on September 16 as the second season of the new league phase format kicks off.
Matchweek one is stacked with big fixtures: Chelsea head to Germany to face Bayern Munich, Liverpool host Atletico Madrid in a rematch of their dramatic 2020 Round of 16 clash, and Newcastle take on Barcelona at St. James’ Park in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.
Under the current format, each team plays eight different opponents in the league stage — a setup that continues to spark debate over fixture congestion. However, the focus this week is on a late amendment to squad registration rules that could offer clubs a lifeline if players suffer long-term absences.
UEFA Announce Last-Minute Squad Registration Update
UEFA confirmed that teams in the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League can now make one squad change during the league phase. Their statement reads:
> “The Executive Committee approved an amendment to the 2025/26 UEFA men’s club competitions’ regulations to allow the temporary replacement of one outfield player with a long-term injury or illness during the league phase, up to matchday six.”
The governing body said the move is designed to prevent squads from being unfairly depleted and to protect players from excessive workload. While UEFA has yet to define what qualifies as a “long-term injury or illness,” the change could give excluded players a way back into contention if a teammate is ruled out.
For Liverpool, that could mean Federico Chiesa is handed a route back into the competition should an injury arise. The Italian has been in strong form this season, scoring a dramatic late winner against Bournemouth on opening weekend — a performance that convinced Arne Slot and his staff to keep him at Anfield.
Chelsea could also benefit by replacing Liam Delap, who is set to miss around 10 weeks with a hamstring injury, with new arrival Facundo Buonanotte. Meanwhile, Tottenham’s Mathys Tel admitted during France U21 duty that missing out “definitely hurts,” but vowed to prove himself to Thomas Frank — and could now be added if Spurs lose an attacker later in the campaign.
