Rodri has been crowned the winner of the 2024 Ballon d’Or.
At a glamorous event in Paris on Monday night, the Manchester City and Spain midfielder received the prestigious Ballon d’Or trophy.
Rodri had an outstanding season, winning both the Premier League with Manchester City and the Euro 2024 title with his national team.
After accepting the award from George Weah, Rodri expressed, “It’s an incredible night for me. If I may, I would like to speak in my language, Spanish.
“Good evening, everyone. I have many people to thank. First, I want to thank France Football and UEFA for this award.
“Thanks to all who are here, and to those who voted for me. Today is a special day, not just for me, but for my family. I especially want to thank my girlfriend Laura, as today marks our eighth anniversary. Without her, I wouldn’t be the same.”
He continued, “I also want to thank my family for instilling values in me, guiding me on the right path, and helping me become the man I am today.
“I must acknowledge my agent Paulo, who has supported my dreams by taking me to matches. I also want to thank my teammates, as I wouldn’t be here without them; football is a team sport. It’s very special to me—Manchester City is the best club in the world, and they have made everything much easier. I appreciate Luis (De La Fuente) for believing in me.
“I want to mention my teammates with whom I won the Euro title, especially Dani Carvajal, who suffered the same injury I did. Lamine Yamal, I know you will win this award soon. This is a victory for Spanish football, and many friends have reached out to me to say, ‘FOOTBALL HAS WON TODAY!’
Finally, Rodri shared a personal story: “I want to tell you about my journey that led me here. When I was 17, I packed my suitcase to chase a dream. One day, I cried to my father, saying it was all over; I had dedicated my life to getting here, and now it seemed lost. My father replied, ‘We’ve come this far; let’s keep going.’ That changed my mindset. I am just a normal kid with values, and I understand what hard work means. Thank you very much.”
