“Viktor Gyökeres Claps Back at Gabriel After Arsenal Star Mimics His Signature Celebration”
The two players faced off in Arsenal’s dominant 5-1 victory last night.
Sporting Club forward Viktor Gyökeres has now responded after Arsenal defender Gabriel mimicked his signature celebration.
Gyökeres, 26, has been in excellent form this season, netting 24 goals in just 20 appearances. However, he couldn’t add to his tally against Arsenal as the Gunners triumphed 5-1 in Lisbon on Tuesday.
While Gyökeres was likely frustrated by the defeat, Gabriel added insult to injury by copying his celebration.
The Brazilian scored Arsenal’s third goal just before halftime, finishing Declan Rice’s corner with a perfect header. Afterward, he surprised fans by recreating Gyökeres’ signature move, clasping his hands in front of his face in the same manner the Swedish striker often does.
When asked about Gabriel’s imitation, Gyökeres responded with a smile: “Gabriel’s celebration? He’s welcome to steal it if he can’t come up with his own! I didn’t know he did that, but it’s fun that he likes my celebration.”
Reports from the Metro suggest the move might have been a response to when Pedro Gonçalves replicated Granit Xhaka’s celebration after scoring against Arsenal in a penalty shootout win for Sporting in March 2023.
Gyökeres continues to attract attention from top European clubs, with scouts from Manchester United, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, and Barcelona reportedly watching him during Tuesday’s match.
The victory pushed Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal into seventh place in the 36-team Champions League group stage.
However, there were concerns over Gabriel’s fitness after he experienced discomfort during the game. Arteta addressed the issue in his post-match comments.
“We’re not sure about his fitness yet. He mentioned some discomfort, and I was about to bring on Ras [Raheem Sterling], but I couldn’t make the change, so we had to make other substitutions,” said Arteta.
Despite this, Arteta was pleased with his team’s performance, adding, “I’m delighted with what I saw. I knew that if we kept playing this way, good things would happen in Europe. Today, we were able to replicate that and be even more efficient in the opposition’s half.”
