It was no surprise that Virgil van Dijk faced heavy criticism from the Dutch media following his red card in the Netherlands’ draw against Hungary last night.
The Liverpool captain received two yellow cards within four minutes during the final stages of the UEFA Nations League match in Budapest, ruling him out of the Oranje’s upcoming clash against rivals Germany on Monday.
While coach Ronald Koeman expressed some sympathy for the 33-year-old, whose first booking was for dissent despite his captain’s right to speak to the referee, several Dutch journalists were far less forgiving.
In Voetbal International, Martin Krabbendam gave Van Dijk the joint-lowest rating among Netherlands players, awarding him a score of 5, labeling it a “failing grade.” Algemeen Dagblad’s Mikos Gouka also gave the defender a 5, noting that he had an “unpleasant evening.” However, the harshest criticism came from Rick Kraaijeveld of Sportnieuws, who called it a “stupid” red card, adding: “The incident occurred in a relatively harmless area. As captain, you can’t afford to show frustration with a foul in the final minutes. It left a poor impression.”
Though Van Dijk may have been somewhat unfortunate, especially with the first yellow card, he’s no stranger to criticism from the Dutch press and likely won’t be fazed by the backlash. While his second booking was more clear-cut, the first seemed questionable, as referee Lukas Fähndrich quickly reached for his pocket when Van Dijk approached to voice his opinion.
Despite the frustration, the suspension could have a silver lining for Liverpool, giving Van Dijk over a week to prepare for the Reds’ crucial match against Chelsea next weekend—the first in a series of seven fixtures over 20 days. While it’s a personal blow for Van Dijk, many LFC fans might be relieved he’ll miss the Germany game.
