Explained: The real reason Anfield was overlooked for Euro 2028 fixtures despite its major expansion plans

Liverpool has been confirmed as one of the host cities for Euro 2028, but Anfield won’t feature among the chosen venues for the tournament.

UEFA officially unveiled the event’s branding and match schedule on Wednesday, with Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium set to host five games — four in the group stage and one in the round of 16, which could potentially see England face Wales if results align.

Why Anfield was ruled out
According to Mail Sport, Anfield was effectively disqualified from consideration due to UEFA’s strict regulations. Tournament venues must have a pitch measuring 105 metres in length and 68 metres in width — Anfield’s playing surface falls four metres short of that length requirement.

A snub despite major upgrades
The decision will come as a disappointment given Anfield’s extensive redevelopment since it last hosted matches at Euro ’96. Back then, with a capacity of just over 42,000, the stadium witnessed memorable moments including goals from Enrico Chiesa for Italy and future Liverpool man Vladimir Smicer for the Czech Republic.

Now accommodating over 61,000 fans after the Main Stand and Anfield Road Stand expansions, Anfield stands as one of Europe’s premier football arenas. However, UEFA’s pitch-size restrictions meant it was ineligible regardless of its modern facilities and rich football heritage.

While Reds supporters may be frustrated to see Everton’s new ground gain the international spotlight, Anfield’s global stature remains unquestioned through Liverpool’s consistent presence in European competitions.

And although Italy could still qualify for Euro 2028, Federico Chiesa won’t get the chance to follow in his father’s footsteps by scoring in L4 — not that Liverpool fans will mind, as long as he keeps doing it in a red shirt.
