What Aston Villa staff have said about Harvey Elliott despite his limited playing time on loan from Liverpool

Since joining Aston Villa on loan from Liverpool at the end of the summer window, Harvey Elliott has struggled to get the playing time he hoped for.

According to The Athletic, the move includes an obligation to buy once he reaches 10 appearances this season — with the fee reported as £35m by Merseyside sources and £30m by Midlands outlets. Yet, nearly two months after arriving, the 22-year-old has featured only five times, and he’s now gone three straight games as an unused substitute, including Thursday’s Europa League loss to Go Ahead Eagles (Transfermarkt).

Despite limited minutes, Elliott has made a strong impression behind the scenes. Journalist Jacob Tanswell wrote that Villa staff have been “impressed” by his professionalism and attitude, which align with Unai Emery’s meticulous standards. After his debut against Everton, Elliott even took the time to greet and introduce himself to journalists. One staff member described him as “a good lad, with a good head on young shoulders.”

Elliott has admitted his move from Liverpool was a “selfish” decision to secure more regular football, but breaking into Emery’s starting XI has proven difficult. His bright early performances — including a goal in the Carabao Cup against Brentford — haven’t earned him much more than a few late cameos in October.

Emery even criticised him publicly after a misplaced pass in the 1-1 draw with Sunderland, a reaction some viewed as overly harsh toward a player trying to inject creativity into a struggling attack.

With Villa hosting Manchester City on Sunday and Elliott ineligible to face Liverpool the following weekend, Emery might be tempted to rotate his squad and give the youngster a chance to start.

Elliott’s patience has been tested, but if he continues to impress off the field, he’ll be hoping that translates into more opportunities on it soon.
