What Aston Villa coaches have said about Harvey Elliott despite his restricted minutes during his loan spell from Liverpool

Since joining Aston Villa on loan from Liverpool late in the summer transfer window, Harvey Elliott has found regular playing time hard to come by.

As reported by The Athletic, his loan deal includes an obligation to buy if he reaches 10 appearances this season, with the fee said to be £35 million by Merseyside sources and £30 million according to Midlands outlets. Nearly two months into his spell, however, the 22-year-old has made only five appearances and has gone three consecutive matches without playing, including Thursday’s Europa League defeat to Go Ahead Eagles (Transfermarkt).

Despite his limited involvement, Elliott has earned praise within the club. Journalist Jacob Tanswell noted that Villa staff have been “impressed” by his professionalism and positive attitude, qualities that fit Unai Emery’s high standards. After his debut against Everton, Elliott reportedly took the initiative to introduce himself to journalists, while one staff member described him as “a good lad, with a good head on young shoulders.”

Elliott has acknowledged that his decision to leave Liverpool was “selfish,” motivated by a desire for more consistent minutes, yet breaking into Emery’s starting lineup has proved difficult. Although he showed early promise — notably scoring in the Carabao Cup win over Brentford — his involvement has since been limited to short substitute appearances in October.

Emery also drew attention when he publicly criticised Elliott for a misplaced pass in the 1-1 draw with Sunderland, a comment some observers viewed as unnecessarily severe toward a player still adapting and attempting to add creativity to Villa’s attack.

With Manchester City visiting on Sunday and Elliott ineligible to face his parent club Liverpool the following week, Emery may opt to rotate his squad and give the midfielder an opportunity to feature.

Elliott’s patience continues to be tested, but his strong impression off the pitch could soon help him earn more chances to prove himself on it.
