Thomas Frank makes fresh Tottenham pledge before Everton clash
“I’m convinced we’ll play with high intensity against Everton,” said the Tottenham manager during Friday’s press conference. “I’m also convinced we’ll deliver a strong, competitive performance.”
Frank admitted his team were “out of sync” and lacked energy in midweek against Monaco, where they escaped with a goalless draw but could easily have conceded several goals. For most of this season, Spurs have been impressive off the ball, showing notable defensive progress from last year. The manager remains confident his side will rediscover that form on Sunday during their first visit to the Hill Dickinson Stadium, though he conceded that regaining full attacking fluency will take time. “Completely free-flowing and all that? Maybe not,” he added.
Frank is well aware that Tottenham’s creativity remains a concern. The team ranks 14th in the Premier League for expected goals, with too few threatening moments from open play. While addressing that issue is important, it may not happen immediately. After a frustrating week and with a demanding run of fixtures ahead, expecting Spurs to suddenly deliver an attacking masterclass against Everton would be unrealistic.
If Tottenham are to secure three points, they must rely on the fundamentals that have served them well this season. Frank’s side boast the league’s best away record, a testament to their disciplined and pragmatic style, which prioritises counter-attacks and set-pieces. This approach, though less popular with home supporters, has proven effective on the road. Spurs are able to choose their moments in attack rather than trying to break down compact defences.
For Frank, restoring defensive solidity is the immediate priority. Despite starting Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur against Monaco, Spurs were often exposed, with disjointed pressing and gaps in midfield leaving them vulnerable. Only poor finishing and several key saves from Guglielmo Vicario prevented defeat.
Recent performances away from home, including against Leeds and Bodo/Glimt, have also raised concerns. Everton, unbeaten at home this season, will test Spurs’ resolve, and Frank knows his players must match their intensity and physicality to avoid trouble.
While creativity and attacking flair remain longer-term goals, Frank’s system depends on a strong defensive structure. Without it, as seen in Monaco, the team’s balance falters. The manager is also tasked with reigniting Xavi Simons’ influence and managing until Dominic Solanke returns, but those challenges will take time to resolve.
