Former Liverpool coach who played a key role in the club’s Champions League triumph has passed away at the age of 64, with the Reds paying tribute to him.
Liverpool have issued a heartfelt tribute following the passing of their former goalkeeping coach and ex-Real Madrid star, Jose Manuel Ochotorena, who has died aged 64.
In an emotional statement released on Monday morning, the club said:
“Liverpool FC is deeply saddened by the passing of former goalkeeper coach Jose Manuel Ochotorena. It was announced today that he has passed away at the age of 64.”
Ochotorena joined Liverpool in 2004 alongside manager Rafael Benitez, having previously worked with him at Valencia. During his three years at Anfield, he played a key role in one of the club’s most successful periods, helping the Reds win the Champions League in 2005 and the FA Cup in 2006, as well as reach another Champions League final in 2007.
After leaving Liverpool, he returned to Valencia and also took up the role of goalkeeping coach for the Spanish national team, contributing to their golden era that included Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup, and Euro 2012 victories.
A San Sebastián native, Ochotorena began his playing career with Real Madrid, where he won three La Liga titles, two UEFA Cups, and a Copa de la Liga between 1982 and 1988. He later made over 100 appearances for Valencia and also represented Tenerife, Racing Santander, and Logroñés.
He earned one senior cap for Spain in 1989 and was part of their squad for the 1990 World Cup. After retiring in 1998, he immediately moved into coaching, where he went on to enjoy remarkable success at both club and international level.
Liverpool concluded their tribute by saying their thoughts are with Ochotorena’s family and friends during this difficult time.
