Poll results paint a bleak picture for Liverpool’s hopes of defending their Premier League crown
Six months ago, Liverpool celebrated their 20th league title in euphoric fashion at Anfield after thrashing Tottenham Hotspur 5-1. Fast forward to today, and that triumph feels like a distant memory.
Over the past month, the Reds have lost four Premier League matches — the same number they lost throughout the entire 2024/25 campaign, with two of those coming after the title had already been secured. What was once a five-point lead over Arsenal has now turned into a seven-point deficit, leaving Arne Slot’s side down in seventh place, sitting exactly midway between leaders Arsenal and 17th-placed Fulham in terms of points.
Sky Sports poll delivers harsh verdict on Liverpool
A recent Sky Sports poll asked fans if Liverpool would retain their Premier League crown — only 7% said “yes.” Former QPR and Southampton striker Charlie Austin agreed with the overwhelming majority on Fan Club, arguing that Liverpool’s form has been far from convincing.
“They’ve lost four in a row and are seven points behind Arsenal,” Austin said. “Arsenal are consistent right now — they’re doing what Liverpool did last year: not playing brilliantly but still winning, while everyone else is slipping up. Liverpool have been poor in these four games and haven’t deserved to win any of them.”
Liverpool must quickly reverse their decline
Although each of Liverpool’s recent defeats has been by a single goal — including heartbreaking stoppage-time losses at Crystal Palace and Chelsea — their performances overall have lacked conviction. Even during a run of seven consecutive wins before the slump began at Selhurst Park, flaws in their play were apparent.
Last week’s 5-1 thrashing of Eintracht Frankfurt proved to be a false dawn. Club legend John Aldridge voiced the frustration of many fans, criticising the side’s naive defending and questioning the players’ desire. The statistics tell the story: Liverpool have already conceded 14 goals in the league, compared to just three for Arsenal — a glaring difference that highlights one of Slot’s biggest problems.
Jamie Carragher has described the situation as “crisis time,” and few would argue. Still, with 75% of the season remaining, there’s ample time to recover the seven-point gap — but only if Liverpool respond swiftly. Otherwise, their hopes of retaining the title could be gone well before Christmas.
