Zinedine Zidane’s position on the Liverpool job revealed as betting odds tumble on him becoming their next manager

Zinedine Zidane has long made his position on Liverpool clear despite new speculation linking him with the Anfield job.

Just weeks ago, things looked promising for Arne Slot — Liverpool had beaten Southampton 2-1 in the Carabao Cup and opened the 2025/26 season with seven consecutive wins across all competitions. But the mood has since shifted dramatically. The Reds have now suffered four straight Premier League defeats and were also beaten by Galatasaray in the Champions League.

Following the latest 3-2 loss to Brentford, pressure on Slot is intensifying, with some supporters questioning whether he’s the right man to lead the team. As a result, betting odds have shortened on former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane to replace him.

According to Betfair, Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner is currently favourite at 3/1, followed by Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola at 4/1. Zidane sits third in the running at 9/2, ahead of Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann (7/1) and a potential Jurgen Klopp return (9/1).

As for Zidane’s views on Liverpool, the French legend has spoken highly of both the club and Anfield in the past. Speaking to Real Madrid’s YouTube channel, he named Liverpool among the best stadiums to play at, alongside Manchester United’s Old Trafford.

Ahead of Madrid’s clash with Liverpool in 2021, Zidane also described the Reds as a “complete team,” praising their collective strength as well as their attacking trio. “They’re a strong, solid unit,” he said. “The three forwards are very efficient, but it’s the team as a whole that makes them dangerous.”

However, Zidane has previously admitted that language could be a stumbling block if he were to manage in England. Speaking to L’Équipe in 2022, he said: “I understand English, but I don’t fully master it. I know some coaches go to clubs without speaking the language, but I work differently.”
