Thomas Gronnemark appears to hint at possible Liverpool return with five-word response on social media
Thomas Gronnemark has hinted that he could be open to rejoining Liverpool in the future.
The 49-year-old Dane, who worked as the Reds’ throw-in coach from 2018 to 2023, was initially mocked by pundits such as Andy Gray for his unusual role. However, his influence quickly proved effective — data showed measurable improvements in Liverpool’s throw-in efficiency.
Speaking on The Football Historian Podcast earlier this year, Gronnemark revealed that he increased Joel Matip’s throw-in distance by over eight metres during his very first training session.
Throw-in routines have become a growing tactical trend in the Premier League this season, something Liverpool were reminded of on Saturday when Brentford used one to score early through Dango Ouattara — a moment that frustrated club legend John Aldridge.
After the match, a fan reposted one of Gronnemark’s old tweets from 2018 with the message, “Fancy a job now, mate?” The former coach replied, “Always ready to help, mate,” suggesting he’d be open to a return.
Once ridiculed, Gronnemark is now seen as a pioneer. According to premierleague.com, the average number of long throw-ins per game in the top flight has more than doubled this season (from 1.52 to 3.44), up from just 0.89 in 2020/21.
His data also shows how dramatically Liverpool improved under his guidance — from 18th in the Premier League for successful throw-ins under pressure (45.4%) before his arrival, to 1st (68.4%) after his debut season.
Now coaching throw-ins “all around the world” and sharing his expertise through YouTube tutorials, Gronnemark continues to make his mark globally. If he were to return to English football, there’s little doubt his methods would be embraced rather than dismissed — and Liverpool would surely welcome him back with open arms.
