Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven is reportedly not among the club’s top earners, and the north London side must make securing him a new contract a top priority.

The Dutchman played a decisive role in Spurs’ 3-0 win over Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday, scoring twice from set-pieces in the first half to give his team a comfortable advantage. Since joining from Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg in the summer of 2023 for around £43 million, Van de Ven has established himself as a key figure under Thomas Frank and is one of the first names on the team sheet when fit.

Praised as “exceptional” by former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp, Van de Ven’s importance to the team cannot be overstated. According to the Evening Standard, he is not believed to be among Tottenham’s highest-paid players — a situation that doesn’t reflect his impact on the pitch.

Although there is no indication that Van de Ven is seeking a move, Tottenham must act swiftly to reward him with improved terms to ward off potential interest from elsewhere. The Evening Standard report also notes that Real Madrid have been linked with the defender, heightening the urgency for Spurs to secure his future.

With several recent arrivals at the club reportedly earning more than Van de Ven, Tottenham risk unsettling one of their most influential players. Data from Capology shows the 23-year-old earns around £90,000 per week — a figure that top European clubs would easily exceed — reinforcing the need for Spurs to move quickly to renew his deal and bring his salary in line with the club’s top earners.
