“I want to stay here” – Liverpool star makes his stance clear with straightforward remarks about his future
It’s been a rollercoaster season for Liverpool so far.
The defending Premier League champions began the campaign looking every bit like favorites to retain their title. Five consecutive wins and a series of dramatic late goals highlighted the strong mentality Arne Slot had instilled in his team.
What made their early success even more impressive was that it came without major contributions from their big-money summer signings, suggesting there was still untapped potential in the squad.
However, the momentum has since stalled. The Reds have lost four straight league games and now trail Arsenal by seven points in the title race.
One of the few bright spots this season has been Federico Chiesa. The Italian winger has made a real impact off the bench and continues to push for a regular starting spot. Ahead of Liverpool’s Carabao Cup tie against Crystal Palace, Chiesa addressed his situation in an interview with Liverpool.com.
> “Right now, I’m happy with what I’m doing,” he said. “I’m not happy that the team isn’t winning, but personally I feel I’m giving a lot to the team and the fans. I just want to keep doing that to help Liverpool win again.
“Of course, I want to stay here and play well — that’s my main goal. The coach decides who starts, but if I perform well, I’ll earn more minutes. Last year I wasn’t fit or mentally ready, but this season I feel stronger and more confident. I know I can still get better and reach the level I was at during the Euros.
“I’ve improved a lot in many aspects of my game, even though I’ve lost a bit of speed.”
Chiesa is in his best shape since joining Liverpool and clearly deserves more opportunities. He’s expected to start against Palace in the Carabao Cup, but even in the Premier League, Slot would be wise to give him more playing time — especially as several first-team regulars continue to struggle. Rotating his squad more could be key to reigniting Liverpool’s season and keeping morale high.
