Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was left out of Arne Slot’s squad for the Carabao Cup clash against Crystal Palace.

Despite not featuring, Slot revealed that Van Dijk showed a classy gesture during the Reds’ 3-0 defeat at Anfield.

Slot made ten changes from the side that lost 3-2 to Brentford in the Premier League, with only Milos Kerkez keeping his place. The lineup included three teenagers – Rio Ngumoha, Trey Nyoni, and Kieran Morrison – while Freddie Woodman and Morrison were handed their Liverpool debuts.

However, it was the visitors who dominated in the heavy Merseyside rain. Ismaila Sarr’s first-half brace gave Palace a two-goal cushion at the break. Despite flashes of quality from Federico Chiesa, Liverpool managed just one shot on target from eight attempts, while Palace were much sharper in attack.

The night got worse for the Reds when 18-year-old Amara Nallo was sent off in the 79th minute after bringing down Justin Devenny as he broke through on goal. It was Nallo’s second red card in as many appearances for Liverpool, having also been dismissed on his Champions League debut against PSV last season.

Palace sealed their victory late on through Yeremy Pino’s goal three minutes from time, leaving Liverpool fans frustrated and Nallo devastated.

The young defender will surely learn from the experience, and fortunately, he has senior teammates to guide him — particularly Van Dijk.

Speaking after the game, Slot praised his captain and Ibrahima Konaté for the way they supported the youngster.
“I didn’t need to say much to Nallo,” said Slot. “Ibou and Virgil went straight over to talk to him. That shows me they are great human beings.”

Liverpool will look to bounce back when they face Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday, before tough tests against Real Madrid and Manchester City.
