Joe Gomez returned to Liverpool’s starting lineup for his sixth appearance of the season, but the club’s longest-serving player couldn’t stop another disappointing defeat for the Reds.
Despite Arne Slot opting for a three-at-the-back setup, Crystal Palace once again proved to be Liverpool’s nemesis in 2025, scoring three unanswered goals at Anfield.
Adding to the frustration for home fans was the sight of Marc Guehi lining up for the visitors — the defender who was on the verge of joining Liverpool on deadline day before Palace pulled the plug at the last moment.

Following the final whistle, Gomez was seen deep in conversation with the England international in the centre circle as players from both teams exchanged handshakes.
Journalist Lewis Steele captured the moment and posted it on X (formerly Twitter) with a cheeky caption: “Joe Gomez tapping up Marc Guehi at full-time.”
Missed Guehi deal stings even more amid poor form
Each defeat seems to make Liverpool fans dwell more on what could have been. The Reds have now conceded 11 goals in five October fixtures, including six in the past week alone.
While Gomez struggled on the night — his failed clearance leading to Ismaila Sarr’s opener — Guehi once again impressed at the heart of Palace’s defence.
A January move for the Eagles captain could be revisited, particularly if he enters the final six months of his contract. However, overseas clubs would be free to negotiate a pre-contract at that point.
To make matters worse for Liverpool supporters, The Athletic revealed that Guehi was eager to join Anfield earlier in the summer, but the deal collapsed because Liverpool hesitated to meet Palace’s £45 million asking price.
Whether Guehi becomes ‘the one that got away’ remains to be seen, but for now, Liverpool’s current defenders must step up and bring some much-needed solidity to this fragile backline.
