Stephen Warnock observed Virgil van Dijk’s reaction at Anfield immediately after Amara Nallo was shown a red card.

Amara Nallo made only his second competitive appearance for Liverpool tonight — but, just like his debut, it ended far too soon.

The 18-year-old’s first outing for the Reds came last January in the Champions League against PSV Eindhoven, when he was sent off just four minutes after coming on. History repeated itself on Wednesday as Liverpool crashed out of the Carabao Cup to Crystal Palace.

This time, Nallo managed 12 minutes before being dismissed for a professional foul on Justin Devenny, having entered the game in the 67th minute.

It was another difficult moment in the teenager’s early career, and Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk quickly sought him out to offer words of comfort following the sending-off.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Stephen Warnock remarked:

> “What a horrible feeling for the youngster, Amara Nallo. There’s nothing worse than being sent off on your debut, and then in your next appearance, you make another mistake that leads to the same outcome. I’ve just seen Virgil van Dijk walk down the tunnel — you have to try to pick the youngster up.”

A lesson to learn for Nallo

Nallo’s senior record now stands at an unfortunate 16 minutes of game time and two red cards, both for denying clear goalscoring chances.

While his dismissal didn’t change the result — Palace were already 2–0 up — it was still a personal setback for the young defender. Van Dijk’s apparent decision to go straight to him afterward highlights strong leadership and empathy, as the captain sought to support a teammate enduring a tough moment.

For Nallo, the challenge now is to treat this as a learning experience and show resilience. He’s clearly talented to have reached Liverpool’s first team at 18, and with the right mindset, he can bounce back and let his ability shine through in the future.
