Dimitar Berbatov Claims Unexpected Premier League Talent Has the Potential to Become the Next Luka Modric
Dimitar Berbatov, a Premier League cult icon who starred for Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, and Fulham, was admired for his elegant playing style and flawless technique. Though the Bulgarian retired in 2019, he remains active in the football scene, often sharing his insights on today’s game.
Having also represented Bayer Leverkusen before moving to England, Berbatov has been closely following Florian Wirtz — another Leverkusen graduate who joined Liverpool for £116 million this summer. The 22-year-old midfielder has yet to make an impact at Anfield, failing to register a goal or assist in nine Premier League appearances so far.
Despite Wirtz’s slow start, Berbatov is urging patience. Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, he praised the youngster’s talent and predicted he will eventually shine under Arne Slot.
> “I love him. He’s a fantastic player. He will be unbelievable, trust me,” Berbatov said. “He just needs patience, good people around him, and a coach who understands his quality. Everyone can see how good he is — he just needs time to adapt. I guarantee he’ll be a success.”
Berbatov, who shared a brief time at Tottenham with Luka Modric before leaving for Manchester United, compared Wirtz’s potential to that of the Croatian Ballon d’Or winner. He believes the German’s technical ability will help him thrive despite any physical limitations.
Reflecting on his own career, Berbatov admitted he went through similar struggles when adapting to new clubs like Leverkusen and Spurs:
> “When I first went to Leverkusen, things didn’t work right away. I had to be patient. The same at Spurs — new place, new language, new people. It took time. I even thought about going back, but I reminded myself to stay focused and keep working. You need ambition stronger than your fear to succeed.”
If Wirtz can adjust to life in England, Berbatov believes he has the tools to reach — or even surpass — the levels achieved by both himself and Modric. For now, though, patience remains key for Liverpool and their new star.
