Arne Slot was caught off guard by an unexpected question during his Friday morning press conference ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Aston Villa.
The 47-year-old addressed the media to preview the Premier League fixture, with the Reds desperate for a morale-boosting win after losing six of their last seven matches in all competitions.
Their alarming dip in form has prompted some pundits to question whether Slot will still be in charge by Christmas, while former Everton CEO Keith Wyness even suggested that contract talks with the Dutchman have been “put on hold” amid the team’s struggles.
Slot surprised by contract question
During the press conference, Slot was asked whether discussions were taking place over a possible extension to his current deal, which runs until June 2027 — a topic he was quick to dismiss.
“That’s the last question I was expecting!” he said via Liverpool FC on YouTube. “My focus is completely on getting Liverpool back to winning ways. Contract talks, if they even exist, are not something we discuss here. Let’s start winning again first — that’s my main focus.”
Slot’s reluctance to engage in talk about his own contract comes as no surprise. Throughout last season, he consistently avoided commenting on the futures of key players such as Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, maintaining a firm stance on keeping such matters private.
Given that record, it was always unlikely he’d discuss his own situation publicly — and the fact that he was asked the question at all, despite Liverpool’s recent slump, seems misplaced.
As we’ve seen with many teams this season, fortunes in football can change quickly. Aston Villa, tomorrow’s opponents, are proof of that — just a few weeks ago they trailed Liverpool by 12 points and 17 places, yet now sit level on points with the champions.
If the Reds can get back to winning ways this weekend and build momentum with strong results against Real Madrid and Manchester City, the pressure on Slot will quickly ease.
For now, it’s clear the Dutchman remains fully committed to leading Liverpool forward.
