Arne Slot accused of ‘giving up’ as Liverpool manager faces ‘immense pressure’
Arne Slot appears to be prioritising certain competitions as he looks to revive Liverpool’s Premier League campaign.
The Reds’ 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Crystal Palace marked their sixth loss in seven matches across all competitions, intensifying pressure on the Dutch manager.
Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat to Brentford further dented their title hopes, leaving them seven points adrift of Arsenal and heightening scrutiny on Slot’s position ahead of the Aston Villa clash.
Slot accused of ‘waving the white flag’ with team selection
Slot made ten changes from the side that played Brentford for the Carabao Cup tie against Palace, a decision that backfired. Speaking to Sky Sports (30 October), Jamie O’Hara suggested the move reflected the mounting pressure on Slot.
“I expected more from Liverpool last night,” O’Hara said. “They were at home, and while Palace are a solid team, he should’ve picked a stronger lineup. It looked like he just threw the young lads out there to say, ‘I’m not interested in this competition.’
“The bench was poor compared to clubs like Arsenal, Spurs, or Newcastle, who still had strong options available. Arsenal, for example, could bring on Saka to change the game—Liverpool didn’t have that.”
O’Hara added, “It felt like Slot had given up on the Carabao Cup. He knows the pressure he’s under to deliver results in the Premier League and Champions League, so he’s sacrificed this one. It was tough on the youngsters—playing in front of frustrated fans against a good Palace side was always going to be difficult.”
Liverpool expected to be fresh for Villa
After resting several key players in midweek, Slot will expect a rejuvenated performance against Aston Villa as Liverpool look to secure a vital three points.
While he admitted his side looked weary against Brentford, Slot knows there will be no excuses if they fail to deliver. With fixtures piling up, his decision to rotate may prove wise in the long term, even if it adds pressure in the short term.
