Slot Calls Out Gerrard on Live TV for Turning Down Liverpool Request

The ex-Liverpool skipper spoke with the club’s current head coach after the Reds’ 2-0 win over Aston Villa.

Arne Slot appeared to playfully call out Steven Gerrard for turning down a recent request from the club, doing so right in front of him during a live TNT Sports broadcast.

Slot was visibly in better spirits than in recent weeks after Liverpool ended their run of four straight Premier League losses with a 2-0 victory at Anfield. The win closed the gap slightly on leaders Arsenal, who earlier beat Burnley 2-0, leaving Liverpool ten points off the top.

Liverpool briefly thought they’d fallen behind when Hugo Ekitike’s header was ruled out for offside just before the break, but moments later Mohamed Salah pounced on Emi Martinez’s mistake to notch his 250th goal for the club. Ryan Gravenberch made it 2-0 in the 58th minute when his effort deflected off Pau Torres and beat Martinez.

The result moved Liverpool up to third in the table, behind Arsenal and Bournemouth going into Sunday’s fixtures.

After the game, Slot joined the TNT Sports panel featuring former Liverpool stars Gerrard, Steve McManaman and Joe Cole. Host Lynsey Hipgrave pointed out it was Slot’s first time meeting Gerrard, prompting a friendly handshake and laughter all around.

Slot then jokingly reminded Gerrard that he had invited him to the training ground “in a roundabout way,” to which Gerrard replied, “I’ll be there tomorrow,” sparking further jokes from McManaman.

Slot continued answering questions about the match and Liverpool’s upcoming clash with a “special” Real Madrid side, while also chatting casually about Gerrard’s paddle skills. The tone throughout was light-hearted.

Before the match, Gerrard had publicly backed Slot amid speculation over his job security, praising the way he handled taking over from Jurgen Klopp and insisting the calls for his sacking were “nonsense,” especially given the overhaul and injury problems the team has faced.

Liverpool now turn their focus to their Champions League tie with Real Madrid on Tuesday, followed by a trip to the Etihad to face Manchester City next Sunday.
