Virgil van Dijk responds to Wayne Rooney’s recent criticism

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has responded strongly to recent criticism from Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, labelling the claims that the Reds have lacked leadership this season as “lazy.”

The Dutch defender has faced scrutiny amid Liverpool’s poor run of form, which saw them lose four consecutive Premier League matches and fall seven points behind Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal after once topping the table.

Rooney, speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show last week, questioned the attitude and body language of senior Liverpool players, particularly Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, suggesting they had not shown the authority expected from leaders.

“Their body language this season isn’t right,” Rooney said, implying that Liverpool’s key figures have lost their usual intensity.

However, following Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Anfield, Van Dijk dismissed the criticism, insisting that team spirit remains strong within the squad.

“I didn’t hear him last year,” Van Dijk replied with a smile, according to the Daily Mail. “It doesn’t bother me. He’s a legend of the game, and I have nothing but respect for him, but I think that comment is just lazy criticism. That’s my personal opinion.”

The Liverpool skipper added that leadership in football goes beyond body language or emotional displays on the pitch.

“It’s easy to point fingers when things aren’t perfect,” he said. “But Rooney knows better than anyone that football is a team effort. We all work together, we all push each other forward.”

“When things go well, no one mentions leadership. It’s part of the game — pundits have to say what they think. I don’t take it personally.”

Van Dijk’s composed response showcased the very leadership qualities that have defined his time at Anfield. While Rooney’s comments stirred discussion among fans and pundits, the Dutchman’s calm defence underlined his professionalism and belief in leading by example on the pitch.

Liverpool will hope Van Dijk continues that form in their upcoming fixtures against Real Madrid in the Champions League and Manchester City in the Premier League.
