Trent Alexander-Arnold appears to have revealed that his Real Madrid transfer was premeditated, casting doubt on the narrative he gave about his Liverpool departure – opinion.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s blockbuster move from Liverpool to Real Madrid last summer continues to cause debate, with the England star now seemingly admitting that his decision to leave was made long before his exit.
The right-back’s contract situation dominated headlines throughout last season, as reports suggested he rejected several new offers from Liverpool while holding out for better terms.
Despite repeated denials, rumours linking him to Real Madrid persisted, with many believing he was intentionally running down his deal to join the Spanish giants on a free transfer.
While teammates like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk often addressed their contract talks publicly, Trent notably avoided interviews — a silence that frustrated fans, who accused him of abandoning his boyhood club in a way that cost Liverpool financially, given his immense market value.
Further suspicion arose during his Real Madrid unveiling in June 2025, when Trent accidentally remarked that he had been “waiting a long time” for the move — a slip that suggested he had been preparing for months. He quickly backtracked, claiming he meant only a few weeks since the deal’s completion. His fluent Spanish at the event also hinted that he’d been getting ready for life in Madrid well before leaving England.
Ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions League showdown with Liverpool, Trent has again implied that his mind was made up early — and credited Jude Bellingham for influencing his decision.
Speaking to Amazon Prime (via Liverpool.com), he said:

He said it was unbelievable, that he’d never experienced anything like it. The drive, the hunger, the expectation to win — it was special. His latest comments are unlikely to go down well with Liverpool supporters, who will feel confirmed in their belief that the transfer was premeditated and that the contract rejections were part of a calculated plan to shift responsibility away from him and onto the club.
