“Real Madrid have to be favourites…” – Steve Nicol shares his prediction for Liverpool vs Real Madrid
Liverpool had suffered six defeats in seven matches across all competitions before bouncing back with a much-improved 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at the weekend — a result that provided a crucial lift in confidence ahead of Xabi Alonso’s side’s visit.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, have been in formidable form this season, winning 13 of their 14 matches and netting 34 goals, with more than half coming from the in-form Kylian Mbappe.
Nicol’s Liverpool vs Real Madrid Prediction
Speaking on ESPN FC, former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol previewed the game and explained what his old club must do to stand a chance against the 15-time European champions.
“I don’t think there’s any doubt – Real Madrid are favourites, regardless of whether it’s at Anfield or not,” Nicol said. “With the way they’re playing and the way Liverpool are playing, it’s clear.
“What I want to see is a proper performance — I want the front line to be sharp, direct and make smarter decisions. But most importantly, the back four need to be compact and united because they’ll be tested by Madrid’s attack, especially Mbappe. For me, it’s all about the performance.”
Pressed for a scoreline, Nicol predicted a 2-1 win for Real Madrid, adding: “You can only judge based on current form, and right now Madrid are a much better team. Liverpool might draw some strength from being at home, but they’ve been well below par defensively.”
Anfield Could Still Make a Difference
When Madrid last visited Anfield, Liverpool were flying — unbeaten in seven games and playing some of their best football of that campaign.
This time, despite the morale-boosting Villa win, Arne Slot’s men are not in the same strong position, and form-wise, Alonso’s Madrid are clear favourites.
Even so, few atmospheres in world football can match Anfield on a European night, and that intangible energy could once again push Liverpool to raise their game.
To stand any chance, the Reds’ defence must be at its absolute best against Mbappe, who won’t have fond memories of this ground after missing a penalty and being upended by Conor Bradley during his last visit in November.
While Nicol doesn’t hold out much hope for Liverpool, there’s every reason to believe the Merseysiders can rise to the challenge and earn a hard-fought draw — a result that would build confidence ahead of next weekend’s clash with Manchester City.
