Guglielmo Vicario has explained what led him to push Lucas Bergvall away and signal toward the Tottenham crowd following Saturday’s defeat to Chelsea.

The atmosphere turned hostile at full-time, with loud boos echoing around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after Spurs finished the match with an xG of just 0.05. Despite the jeers, several players still made their way around the pitch to applaud the fans, including Bergvall, who had earlier been forced off with a concussion.

But Vicario noticed that the young midfielder was being verbally abused by a supporter in the South Stand, prompting him to step in.

Vicario responds to abuse from Spurs fan

The goalkeeper moved Bergvall toward the tunnel and repeatedly gestured back at the fan, pointing at him and then to his eyes in a clear “I’m watching you” signal.

Vicario has since downplayed the situation, stressing that it was an isolated incident involving a single supporter.

Speaking to Football.London, the 28-year-old said:

“In every environment, there are very good people and some bad people. Probably [Lucas] had contact with one bad person. That doesn’t mean everyone is bad.

But there are always a few bad people, and I had to protect Lucas because he was a bit emotional in that moment. With my experience, it was better to deal with it and discuss it later in the dressing room, not out there.”

Should Spurs players still applaud the fans after losses?

It’s admirable when players show appreciation to supporters even after a defeat, especially when those same fans have been booing. However, if they are met with abuse, it’s understandable why some players might hesitate to continue the gesture in the future.
