Van Dijk Leaves Rooney Lost for Words After Challenging Him on His Recent Criticism

Virgil van Dijk directly challenged Wayne Rooney after Liverpool’s Champions League victory over Real Madrid, responding to the former Manchester United star’s recent criticism.

Liverpool snapped their poor run of form last weekend with a win over Aston Villa, and followed it up with a huge 1-0 triumph against Real Madrid, thanks to a second-half header from Alexis Mac Allister – who appeared to aim a subtle dig at Trent Alexander-Arnold in his celebration.

The Reds had been under pressure after defeats to Crystal Palace (twice), Galatasaray, Chelsea and Manchester United, with Rooney publicly questioning the leadership of Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

Rooney had said:
“Van Dijk and Salah may have signed new contracts, but I don’t think they’ve really taken responsibility this season. Their body language hasn’t looked right, and when your two biggest players don’t set the tone, it spreads to the rest of the team.”

After the Real Madrid win, Van Dijk used his Amazon Prime interview to hit back at those remarks:

“There was a lot of energy and work in this performance. They’d won 14 of their last 15 games, so we had to be perfect. We stayed calm in the chaos and executed the game plan. Clean sheets are the foundation, and we’re trying to get back to that.”

He admitted some criticism was deserved but felt plenty of it had been exaggerated:

“I don’t get affected by the noise, but some of the players do. Losing four or five games at Liverpool brings criticism, that’s normal – but a lot of it has gone too far. Ex-players also had tough moments, so they should remember that.”

The Dutch defender stressed his main focus is always the team, the club, and the supporters.

Despite the strong response, Van Dijk and Rooney ended the exchange amicably, sharing a hug before the Liverpool captain left the broadcast set, suggesting no lingering tension between them.
