Tottenham and Chelsea set to face charges as PGMOL expert reviews fiery clash footage
Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are both expected to hear from the Football Association after tempers flared between the two sides during their recent Premier League clash.
According to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee Keith Hackett, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider, both clubs could face disciplinary action for failing to control their players during the heated encounter on Saturday, 1 November.
Joao Pedro once again proved to be a thorn in Tottenham’s side, netting the only goal of the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, while Thomas Frank’s side showed little fight against their London rivals.
Tensions rose further after Rodrigo Bentancur’s heavy tackle on Reece James left the Chelsea captain in visible pain — a challenge that could have led to even more serious consequences had referee Jarred Gillett shown a red card.
The incident sparked a confrontation between players from both teams, and emotions continued to boil over after the final whistle. Djed Spence, clearly frustrated by the defeat, headed straight down the tunnel, drawing attention from fans and pundits alike.
Given that the FA has recently punished Arsenal for similar offences, Tottenham and Chelsea now face the likelihood of being charged for failing to keep their players under control during the derby.
Hackett commented: “They will be charged with failing to control their players. Jarred Gillett actually handled the game well overall — he didn’t interfere too much and allowed the match to flow. But in my opinion, Bentancur’s challenge was a red card. The PGMOL really needs to tighten up its standards.”
