Paul Scholes and Roy Keane have offered contrasting predictions ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Manchester City on Sunday.
Liverpool could climb above Pep Guardiola’s side into second place if they manage to repeat last season’s win at the Etihad. There’s also a chance to close in on league leaders Arsenal, should the Gunners slip up against in-form Sunderland the day before.
After a dreadful run of six losses in seven matches across all competitions, Arne Slot’s men have responded strongly with deserved victories over Aston Villa and Real Madrid. However, their next challenge is a City side who’ve won eight of their last 10 games.
What did Scholes and Keane predict?
During the Stick to Football show, the pundits gave their weekend Premier League predictions, with most backing a Manchester City win.
Ian Wright, speaking from an Arsenal perspective, said:
“A draw would be a good result, but I think City will beat them.”
Jill Scott and Roy Keane both agreed with Wright’s verdict.
Gary Neville didn’t commit to either side, but Paul Scholes was far more decisive. Fresh from claiming Liverpool are “a better team than Real Madrid”, he added:
“I have a massive feeling. I just think Liverpool are better. 2-1.”
Liverpool head to Manchester with belief
Only a week ago, a trip to the Etihad may have seemed daunting for Liverpool, but back-to-back wins have given them renewed confidence before one of the league’s biggest fixtures.
If Slot’s team can repeat last season’s victory, it would feel like a genuine turning point after a miserable October. But they’ll need top-level performances across the pitch – especially in defence.
Stopping Erling Haaland will be key. The Norwegian striker has already scored 27 goals for club and country since August and has only failed to score in two matches this season – both of which City lost.
However, after keeping Kylian Mbappé quiet in midweek, Liverpool won’t shy away from the challenge.
The Reds will need to be at their very best to take three points, but their recent resurgence means they’ll travel to Manchester with real belief that they can do exactly that.
