Tottenham ace is now being compared to Bukayo Saka – and he’s viewed as an upgrade on Brennan Johnson.

Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed an excellent beginning under Thomas Frank, with the club currently sitting sixth in the Premier League. The Dane replaced Ange Postecoglou in the summer and wasted no time transforming Spurs’ attacking output.

Frank’s side have scored 17 times in their opening ten Premier League games, giving them the fourth-best tally in the division. Nine different players have already found the net, with Micky van de Ven and Richarlison leading the club’s scoring charts with three goals each – even though the Brazilian hasn’t scored in his last five league appearances.

Despite the strong start, the numbers could have been even more impressive if Frank had access to a wide forward with the consistency and end product of Bukayo Saka.

Saka has produced a combined 100 Premier League goals and assists in his career, many of which have come against Spurs. He’s faced Tottenham ten times in the league, winning 60% of those matches and scoring five goals – his most recent in the North London Derby coming in September 2024. This season he ranks in the top 5% of Premier League wingers for both touches in the final third and carries into the final third per 90 minutes.

Frank appears to have found someone in his own squad who is drawing those comparisons.

Brennan Johnson arrived from Nottingham Forest for £47.5m back in 2023, but he hasn’t lived up to the fee or the expectations. He scored 18 goals last season in all competitions – including the winner in the 2025 Europa League final against Manchester United – but his overall performances have been inconsistent. Even this campaign, after scoring twice in each of Spurs’ first two league games, he has slipped back down the order. His recent Champions League appearance against Copenhagen summed things up: he scored, but was then sent off.

That has opened the door for Mohammed Kudus.

Signed from West Ham for £55m in the summer, the Ghanaian has made the right flank his own. He already has one goal and four assists in the Premier League this season and his profile, direct style and end product now have him being talked about as Spurs’ very own Saka-type figure – and clearly ahead of Johnson in Thomas Frank’s thinking.
