John Heitinga has been sacked by Ajax, paving the way for a potential return to Liverpool.

Ajax have officially announced the sacking of John Heitinga, bringing an end to a turbulent chapter for the former Liverpool assistant manager.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Dutch club confirmed that the 41-year-old’s contract — originally set to run until June 2027 — has been terminated with immediate effect. Assistant coach Marcel Keizer has also been dismissed, with Fred Grim appointed as interim head coach.

Technical director Alex Kroes expressed regret over the decision, admitting:

> “It’s a painful decision. But looking back at the past few months, things have not gone as we hoped. We’ve seen too little progress and have dropped unnecessary points.”

Kroes has since offered to resign, although the Ajax board has asked him to remain in place for stability.

Heitinga’s dismissal comes just weeks after controversy over James McConnell’s loan move from Liverpool to Ajax — a situation that reportedly caused tension within the club’s hierarchy.

Could a Liverpool return be on the cards?

Heitinga’s connection to Anfield remains strong. After serving under Arne Slot during Liverpool’s title-winning campaign last season, he took on the Ajax role last summer and spoke fondly about his experience working in English football.

It’s not far-fetched to think that the Dutchman could one day make a return to Merseyside. Pep Lijnders followed a similar path — leaving Klopp’s staff to manage elsewhere before returning as assistant.
