Darwin Núñez tipped for swift Premier League return with club seen as the ‘perfect fit’
Darwin Núñez has been backed for a swift Premier League return, less than a year after leaving Liverpool.
The Uruguayan striker, who played a key role in Liverpool’s title-winning campaign under Arne Slot, joined Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal last summer in a £46 million move. Since arriving in Riyadh, he’s registered four goals and two assists in eight appearances.
Despite being under contract until 2028, speculation over a move back to England has already begun. Former Chelsea and France defender Marcel Desailly has urged his old club to consider signing Núñez, claiming he would be an “ideal fit” to solve their attacking woes.
Desailly, who made over 200 appearances for the Blues, told OLGB:
> “Núñez was perfect — young, talented, and full of potential. Things didn’t fully click for him at Liverpool, but the fact they signed him shows his quality. Under Maresca’s system, he could thrive at Chelsea. If things aren’t going smoothly in Saudi Arabia, he might be the one to come back.”
Núñez joined Liverpool in 2022 for an initial £64 million but never fully cemented himself as a consistent goalscorer. His best Premier League campaign saw him net 11 goals in 2023/24, though he managed only five the following season before his departure.
Liverpool have since reinvested in forwards Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak, while Núñez’s new club, Al Hilal, currently sit third in the Saudi Pro League with 17 points — four behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr.
