Ex-Liverpool player despised by Steven Gerrard now facing possible prison sentence for ‘abandoning his family’

A former Liverpool player who famously clashed with Steven Gerrard is reportedly facing the possibility of a prison sentence.

During their time at Anfield, Gerrard and Jamie Carragher were known for their strong personalities and influence in the dressing room, with both holding teammates to high standards on and off the pitch. Gerrard has previously revealed that he closely observed new signings in training, praising the likes of Xabi Alonso and Luis Suarez for instantly impressing him.

However, one player he admitted to disliking was El Hadji Diouf, who joined Liverpool from Lens for £10 million in 2002 after a standout World Cup with Senegal. Despite the hype, Diouf’s performances and attitude disappointed many, leading Gerrard to brand him “top of the list of Liverpool signings I liked least” in his 2015 autobiography.

“He had no real interest in football or respect for the club and fans,” Gerrard wrote. “He always cared more about himself than the team — all show, no substance.”

Diouf’s career was also marred by several controversies, including multiple spitting incidents involving opponents and fans. After leaving Liverpool, he went on to play for clubs such as Bolton, Sunderland, Blackburn, Doncaster, Leeds, and Rangers.

Now 44 and retired for a decade, Diouf has found himself in legal trouble once again. According to The Sun, he could face jail time in Senegal after being accused of “abandoning his family.” Reports claim he skipped a scheduled court hearing in Dakar on Tuesday, despite being ordered to pay monthly child support of £670 along with school and medical expenses.

Under Senegalese law, failing to meet such obligations can lead to imprisonment. Lawyer Mame Adama Gueye, representing Diouf’s ex-partner, stated: “El Hadji Diouf is financially capable. He has the means to pay but refuses to do so. He lives comfortably between Dakar and Saly Portudal.”

Diouf is expected to appear before the high court again on December 5.
