Fabrizio Romano reports that Liverpool have begun talks with Dominik Szoboszlai over a new contract extension.
The club is said to be highly impressed with the Hungarian midfielder’s performances throughout the 2025/26 campaign, and they’re eager to reward his impact. Szoboszlai’s current deal runs until the summer of 2028.
Romano shared the update on Friday evening via X (formerly Twitter), backing up a report from The Athletic’s Gregg Evans, who revealed that initial discussions had already taken place regarding an extension.
The Italian journalist also added that Liverpool plan to approach Ryan Gravenberch—whose contract also expires in 2028—about a similar renewal. With both midfielders having just over two and a half years left on their current terms, it’s a clear indication that the club sees them as key figures in Liverpool’s long-term project.
Szoboszlai’s standout season
Despite early doubts following the arrival of Florian Wirtz last summer, Szoboszlai has silenced critics with a string of outstanding performances, including a superb display against Real Madrid in the Champions League—one that even outshone Wirtz himself.
While statistical ratings currently place Szoboszlai third among Liverpool players this season, behind Gravenberch (7.61) and Gakpo (7.55), his influence and consistency on the pitch arguably make him the team’s best performer.
Manager Arne Slot has played a crucial role in his resurgence, notably ending his experiment at right-back and restoring Szoboszlai to a central attacking role. Slot even praised the Hungarian’s off-the-ball work in his pre-Manchester City press conference, underlining how vital he’s been to the team’s overall balance.
